CPO Liability Insurance Discussion
Stephen Madkour gave his opinion regarding liability insurance for CPOs. The BCC will discuss the topic at a study session next week. Mr. Madkour explained currently, CPOs are not considered agents of the county and not afforded insurance protection like Hamlets or Villages. CPOs are volunteer groups. Some options County Counsel will present are:

Mr. Madkour clarified what staff recommendations would be at this time from a legal perspective but also said he was open to further discussion and ideas to find a good solution.

Several visitors discussed their concern or frustration about not having liability insurance. Stephen answered all of their questions. He also suggested to discuss these concerns with the Board of County Commissioners and at the Board Business Meetings on Thursdays.

Karen Bjorklund announced that the next CPO Summit is on April 12.

Geoffrey recommended the Citizen Involvement Advisory Committee (CIAC) for more information or guidance.

It was discussed that CPOs might go dormant because people lose interest when there are no longer land use issues in their area. Some CPOs have several interests, outside of land use issues. An active CPO can work with the County to expand their boundaries to include non- active CPOs as well.

Marlo Dean asked if we can get an item on the BCC agenda. Amy discussed that the advisory body would make a recommendation to the staff, and the staff would take the recommendation to the BCC on your behalf. There is not a formal process for CPOs. There is a different process for ABCs and CPOs.

Geoffrey suggested that we draft a statement for the BCC that we would like to make recommendations.

Susan moved for Katie to write a statement and distribute to everyone tomorrow and have everyone approve via email. Barbara 2nd, unanimous.

The following people will check with other organizations before the next meeting.

Katie will invite Stephen Madkour and Risk Management for our next meeting. Katie always invites the BCC to the meetings.

Martha Waldemar asked if there is an easier way to search for CPOs on our website. She feels it is too hard to search on the county website.

Marlo Dean will give another email address to Katie to use for email communication.
