Conclusion

Together we will make a difference.

Overall, the number of claims and cost of claims continues to decrease.  We like to think this represents a culture of attention to risk management.  We applaud this commitment and encourage this awareness to continue.

Also of note is the change in relativity between departments on the workers’ compensation graphs.  It is commendable that the Sheriff’s Office has reduced claims to the extent it is no longer the department with the highest claim cost.  Some reasons for this are identification of root causes, follow-through with prevention strategies, accountability, and thorough reporting.  All departments show a reduction since last year except North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District.

We continue to look for ways to improve driving safety since this has historically been a large cost generator.  To augment the use of driving simulators we are developing a driver education e-learning program.  We plan to begin a pilot project in the Roads Division in November 2008.  If successful, we will offer it as a County-wide program.

In our move to the 4-day work week, risk management is at the forefront of our attention.  Safety surrounding telework options, preparing for the fatigue challenges associated with longer days, addressing potential risk exposures due to shorter daylight hours for our road crews, and others, is and will be given attention and priority in the change of schedule.
