Liability Claims
Claims brought against the County comprise a significant portion of the annual expenditures from the self insurance fund. We contract with a third-party administrator to effectively manage general liability, employment and vehicle claims. The following graphs show the pertinent data related to these exposures.
Despite a 33% increase in the number of the top 5 types of liability claims the paid cost decreased by 81% from FY07-08 to FY08-09. The frequency of claims increase was due, primarily, to a large number of flooding claims filed. No or very little costs were expended on these claims accounting for the substantial decrease. Keep in mind claims continue to mature and could still increase. However, we are encouraged by the low costs thus far.
The relativity between departments changed somewhat due to the large number of flooding claims being assigned to the General County group. The top five departments remain the same.
