Fall 2009 Swim Lessons

Students may be enrolled in one learn-to-swim class and one session at a time.

Before enrolling in the next class/session, the student must show certification (received on the last day of class).

Please read class descriptions prior to registering to ensure registration for the correct class. Additional registrations may be made based on availability after your current session. Please have proof of level.

You may register your immediate family only.

All classes must have a minimum of six enrollees to be offered. Classes with insufficient registration will either be canceled or combined.

North Clackamas Aquatic Park American Red Cross Swim Lessons are held twice a week either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. Session dates are as follows:

  • Session 1: Tuesday/Thursday, September 29-October 27
  • Session 2: Monday/Wednesday, November 9-December 14 (No class 11/11 & 11/25)

Pre-registration required.

Fee: Residents $35; Non-residents $45

Pre-School Program

Seals - 3 to 5 years old
A basic introduction to water breath-holding, bubble blowing, front and back floats and rhythmic breathing.

Advanced Seals - 3 to 5 years old
Eligibility in Advanced Seals is based on instructor recommendation.

Super Seals - 3 to 5 years old
Eligibility in Super Seals is based on completion of Advanced Seals and instructor recommendation.

Youth Program - Ages 5 and older

Level A
Introduction to Water Skills: Helps students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Successful completion of this course includes ability to enter the water unassisted, move 10 feet, bob five times to chin level and safely exit the water, perform arm and leg action for front crawl (while supported), as well as floating on front and back with support for three seconds.

Level B
Fundamental Aquatic Skills: Focuses on giving students success with fundamental skills.  Students explore and improve their front and back crawls as well as front and back glide.  Successful completion of this course includes being able to jump into chest-deep water, move into a front float for five seconds, roll to back float, return to standing position, and do back float for five seconds, push off and swim for 15 feet on front and 15 feet on back.

Level C
Stroke Development: Builds on the skills in Level B by providing additional guided practice. In addition, students will begin learning the butterfly, elementary backstroke and basic diving. Successful completion of this course includes being able to jump into deep water, swim front crawl 15 yards with face in the water and rhythmic breathing to the side, and maintaining position by treading water or floating for 30 seconds.

Level D
Stroke Improvement: Develops confidence in the strokes learned and to improve other aquatic skills. This level will focus on greater conditioning and introduce the breaststroke, scissor kick, rotary kick and survival float. Successful completion of this course includes being able to perform a feet-first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, turn immediately and swim back crawl for 25 yards. Swimmers will also need to swim breaststroke 15 yards, tread water for one minute and swim elementary backstroke 15 yards.

Level E
Stroke Refinement: Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes. Will begin advanced skill development and will further focus on conditioning. This level introduces flip turns, sidestroke, survival swimming, long shallow dives, tuck and pike surface dives. Successful completion of this course includes being able to perform a shallow dive into deep water, swim front crawl 50 yards with a flip turn. Swimmers will also need to swim breaststroke 25 yards, tread water for two minutes and swim elementary backstroke 25 yards.

Level F
Swimming and Skill Proficiency: Refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Each of these options focus on preparing students to participate in more advance courses, such as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. These options include:

Fundamentals of Diving
Fundamentals of Diving: This level will introduce the swimmer to basic diving skills.  This includes diving from the side, from a diving board, approach and hurdle from a diving board, diving in a tuck and pike position.  Successful completion of this course includes being able to swim 500 yards continuously (front crawl 100 yards; back crawl 100 yards; breaststroke 50 yards; butterfly 50 yards; elementary backstroke 50 yards; sidestroke 50 yards; butterfly 50 yards and any stroke 100 yards).  Swimmers must also be able to perform a front approach and hurdle with a feet-first entry from a 1-meter springboard, and will also perform a front approach and hurdle with a headfirst entry from a 1-meter springboard..

Fitness Swimming
This level introduces the swimmer to use of a pace clock, pull buoys, fins, hand paddles and training principles. Successful completion of this course includes being able to swim 500 yards continuously (front crawl 100 yards; back crawl 100 yards; breaststroke 50 yards; elementary backstroke 50 yards; sidestroke 50 yards; butterfly 50 yards and any stroke 100 yards). Swimmer must also be able to perform the Cooper 12-minute swim test and compare results with the reassessment results.

* Safety skills are an important part of swimming lessons. All levels will have appropriate skills incorporated in the classes.

* Some swimmers may need to repeat levels to increase their comfort and abilities with the water. Instructors will sign off on Level Progression Cards for assistance in registering each session.
