Clackamas County opens registration for HEAL Grants promoting community health

Applications are now being accepted for 2016 Healthy Eating Active Living grants promoting a healthier Clackamas County.

Grants of up to $8,000 are available to develop or enhance community-based projects supporting wellness for all ages. These projects should encourage the adoption of active lifestyles and healthy eating for county residents where they work, live and play. Projects must take place in and benefit the residents of Clackamas County. All grant applications are due by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17. Recipients of the grants will be announced in January 2016.

The projects are awarded as part of the county’s Community Health Improvement Plan.

Many types of organizations may apply for grant funding. They include: adult centers, businesses, childcare facilities, cities, colleges, community coalitions, faith-based organizations, service organizations, schools and other such organizations serving county residents. Both for-profit and nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply. Individuals are not eligible to apply.

A few of the 14 projects funded in 2015 include:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that chronic diseases – such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes – are among the most prevalent, costly and preventable of all health problems. The goal of this grant effort is to reduce the prevalence of chronic disease and to empower residents to take steps toward improvement of their health.
