Commissioners to honor veterans Nov. 10 at Molalla River Middle School

Update (11/05): The list of those speaking has been updated.

Update (11/03): The list of County Commissioners attending the event has been updated.

Clackamas County Commissioners will speak at a Nov. 10 event at Molalla River Middle School that honors veterans.

Commissioner Paul Savas and Commissioner Martha Schrader will speak at the event that runs from 12:30-2 p.m. inside the school’s gymnasium.

Mike Clarke, a Vietnam veteran and event organizer, said it is critical to teach the younger generation about veterans and their experiences.

“I started this event about 12 years ago when I was still teaching at the middle school,” Clarke said. “It was just some students and me reading some Veterans Day materials. I wanted to get the middle school students to be more aware of what Veterans Day is about. It has now turned into a big event with the band and dignitaries who come to speak. The veterans all tell me and the students how much they appreciate us putting this on … I am a very proud veteran who likes to see our veterans honored this way. They should be honored every day.”

Also speaking will be Miss Oregon Ali Wallace, students and others.

Molalla Police Chief Rod Lucich will sing at the event. Oregon Rep. Vic Gilliam and other state officials will be in attendance.

Following the program, attendees can meet and talk with veterans in attendance and some of the speakers.

This event is free and open to the public. The school is located at 318 Leroy Ave. in Molalla.
