County to study feasibility of a new bridge over Willamette River

The Board of County Commissioners has approved studying the feasibility of constructing a bridge across the Willamette River between Canby and Wilsonville, in approximately the same location as the Canby Ferry. The bridge would carry more travelers than the ferry, would be open all the time (rather than just daylight hours), and would have a toll that possibly could be less than the ferry’s current fare.

Mike Bezner, Assistant Director of Transportation & Development, said the bridge would be designed to withstand earthquakes. The study, expected to be completed in 2018, will include detailed traffic modeling and cost estimates, and consideration of related work needed on roadways that would approach the bridge.

Bezner stated that no decisions have been made yet on whether to build a bridge. The board will review the results of study, discuss the issue further and would certainly not move forward without public input. If eventually a decision is made to proceed with a new bridge, actual construction couldn’t take place after several years of outreach, planning and design.

For more information, members of the media and public may contact Bezner at 503-742-4651.
