Federal law clarifies lands for protection, commercial development in Government Camp and Hood River County

Yesterday, President Donald Trump signed the Mount Hood Cooper Spur Land Exchange Clarification Act into law. This action follows Congress passing the legislation last month.

The law clarifies areas for commercial development and protected forest land on Mount Hood. Specifically, the act allows development of approximately 100 acres near Government Camp in Clackamas County, while more than 700 acres on Mount Hood’s north side will be permanently protected as forest land.

“This law will provide greater certainty for responsible development within Government Camp while permanently protecting hundreds of acres on the mountain,” stated Clackamas County Chair Jim Bernard. “Clackamas County greatly appreciates the bipartisan work of Oregon’s federal delegation, and we look forward to the U.S. Forest Service’s timely completion of the land exchange.”

The law was written by four Oregon lawmakers: Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, and Representatives Greg Walden and Earl Blumenauer. The law’s passage resolves a nearly nine-year dispute over the land exchange that was originally passed by Congress in 2009.

More information can be found on Sen. Wyden’s webpage.
