UPDATE (July 13, 2012, 1:13 p.m.): SEARCHERS LOCATE DROWNED BODY PRESUMED TO BE OVERDUE INNER-TUBER ON CLACKAMAS RIVER

At about 12:15 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012, divers from the Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium located the body of Fernando Ortega Becerra, age 23, of Portland, Oregon, about 600 feet downstream from where he was last seen.

The body was located in about 15 feet of water.

The family has been notified of the death.

The Clackamas County Medical Examiner will be determining the cause and manner of death.

Mr. Ortega Becerra was not wearing a life-jacket when he was located.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office reminds all boaters and other users of the rivers and lakes in Clackamas County to wear a life jacket.

Mr. Ortega Becerra was not required by Oregon law to wear a life jacket while floating on an inner-tube. However, if he had been wearing an appropriate life jacket, this tragedy would likely never have occurred.

EARLIER (July 13, 2012, 10:44 a.m.): Searchers looking for overdue inner-tuber on Clackamas River

Clackamas County 911 received a call just after 8:30 p.m. last night (Thursday, July 12) about an overdue inner-tuber who was floating the Clackamas River from Barton Park to Carver Park.

Friends who were with the victim had reportedly last seen him swimming towards his inter-tube in a swimming hole about 2,000 feet upstream from Carver Park. This area is commonly known as "the rope swing."

The missing subject was still swimming towards his inter tube when the RP floated down stream and lost sight of him.

The friends waited at Carver -- but the male never arrived and hasn't been seen or heard from since.

The Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium searched last night (July 12) but was unable to locate the male or his missing inner-tube. The search resumed this morning (Friday, July 13) -- with divers checking the area he was last seen and several areas downstream.

Members from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office's Marine Patrol, Dive Rescue Team and Search & Rescue -- along with Gladstone Fire Dive Rescue and Lake Oswego Fire Dive Rescue personnel -- are currently searching this morning.

The missing male has been identified as Fernando "Ivan" Ortega Becerra, 23 years old, of Portland. Fernando is described as follows:

  • Hispanic
  • 5 foot 10 inches
  • 130 pounds
  • Black, medium-length hair.
  • Right arm is "sleeved," or covered with tattoos
  • Last seen wearing black cutoff pants, black Vans skate type shoes, and a black shirt with a scull on it that had the word "Misfits" printed on it

Fernando was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

Anyone who may have seen Fernando near Carver Park or knows where he might be is in urged to contact the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office at 503-785-5000.
