At about 2:10 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2012, Andrew McNerthney, age 27, of Milwaukie, Oregon, drove his 2004 Dodge pickup down the Oak Grove boat ramp and into the Willamette River.
Mr. McNerthney and his passenger, Jason Carter, age 32, of Gladstone, Oregon, were both able to climb out of the vehicle and get to shore safely.
McNerthney told deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office that he and Carter were "just fooling around" when he drove too far down the ramp and his front tires went off the edge of the paved ramp and the truck got stuck in the water. He then released the emergency brake in an attempt to back the truck out -- and that was when the truck rolled into the river and eventually became completely submerged.
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit and Sheriff's Office divers responded to the scene, and were able to attach a tow cable to the truck. It was removed from the water at about 3:30 p.m.
Mr. McNerthney was cited for Careless Driving.
