On January 27, 2013, at about 11 a.m., the Clackamas County 911 dispatch center (C-COM) got a call from a man in Wilsonville stating he had killed his dog with a knife the night before and wanted to turn himself in.
Deputies from the Wilsonville Police Department responded to the Bridge Creek Apartments on SW Rose Ln. in Wilsonville and located the subject at his apartment, where he lives alone.
The subject was identified as Kevin Lee Slabaugh, age 28, of Wilsonville, Oregon.
Deputies reported that Mr. Slabaugh immediately told them repeatedly that he had "bought it and killed it" -- referring to a female 3-month-old black Border Bounder puppy.
Deputies learned from Mr. Slabaugh that he had bought the puppy the night before from Critter Cabana in Wilsonville for just over $300, and that he had killed it only a few hours later with a large kitchen knife.
Mr. Slabaugh showed the deputies where he had killed the puppy, as well as where he had hidden the dead body, the knife he had used in the crime, and the clothing he was wearing during the criminal incident.
Mr. Slabaugh told deputies he had been drinking a lot of alcohol and taking prescription medications at the time of the crime. He was not able to provide a motive or reason for his actions.
Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office detectives will be assisting in the follow-up investigation of this crime.
Mr. Slabaugh was lodged at the Clackamas County Jail on a single charge of Aggravated Animal Abuse in the First Degree, ORS 167.322. Bail was set at $15,000.
Mr. Slabaugh is scheduled to make a first appearance by video today at 3 p.m. in Clackamas County Circuit Court.
