One worker killed, others injured in construction-site accident

At approximately 2:50 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a construction-site accident at 45440 SE Jadrny Rd. in Sandy, OR. This location is the site of a residential construction project.

There were several workers from Stalcup Roofing and Construction at the site installing trusses that were being delivered by Pro Build. The incident occurred while the construction workers were installing the trusses on the structure. Thirteen of the trusses toppled over during this process, killing one of the construction workers. A second construction worker suffered serious injuries and had to be taken by Life Flight to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Hospital.

Two other construction workers were taken to area hospitals for minor injuries by American Medical Response. The condition of the workers who have been transported to the hospital is unknown at this time.

Members of the Sandy and Hoodland Fire Departments responded to the scene and rendered aid.

This incident is currently being investigated by the Medical Examiner's Office. An investigator from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) is also investigating. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office will be assisting with this investigation.

The man who died in the construction accident has been identified as 33-year-old Dewayne Douglas Smith from Hood River. The death has been ruled accidental.

The injured parties include: Roger Cauich-Cante, age 41, from Estacada; Joseph Hall, age 18, from Hood River; and Idel UcChable from Estacada.
