Citizens chase down suspect who allegedly stole cash register from Hales Restaurant in Milwaukie
BOOKING PHOTO: Robert James Finanders Jr., age 51
Just before 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, a suspect entered Hales Restaurant, grabbed the cash register, tore it from the counter and fled the restaurant. Patrons dining at Hales chased the suspect to the parking lot and restrained him until police arrived.
Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the report of a theft in progress at Hales Restaurant, located on McLoughlin Blvd in unincorporated Milwaukie. Upon arrival, deputies saw a crowd of restaurant patrons surrounding a Dodge van in the parking lot.
As deputies got closer, they could see the patrons holding a man down until police arrived. A knife was also reportedly seen -- and was later recovered from the suspect's van.
Witnesses told deputies that the man they were detaining had stolen the cash register from the restaurant.
Several witnesses reported watching the suspect enter the restaurant and then, after walking around for a minute or two, watching the suspect go behind the cash register and attempt to open it. The suspect finally grabbed the entire register and fled the business.
Several patrons gave chase and called 911. The suspect drove a Dodge van a short distance -- striking another vehicle before the citizens were able to detain the suspect.
Further investigation revealed the Dodge van was listed as stolen out of Portland.
The suspect has been identified as Robert James Finanders Jr., age 51. He was booked at the Clackamas County Jail on charges of Theft in the First Degree, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, and a parole hold warrant out of Multnomah County. Total bail is $15,000. His booking info is here.
