Today (February 10, 2015) at 1
p.m., Clackamas County Sheriff Craig
Roberts will travel to Salem to testify before the Oregon State
Legislature’s House Committee
on Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness.
Sheriff Roberts will join others testifying in favor of House Bill 2763, the "Veterans' Pay Bill."
HB 2763 -- introduced by Rep. Shemia Fagan (D-Clackamas) -- would permit public agencies at the state and local level to supplement the military pay received by employees who serve in the National Guard or Reserves while on active duty.
Under current law, public employers are prohibited from making up pay lost during a deployment because the employee’s military salary is less than that of their civilian job -- creating an added hardship for citizen-soldiers and their families while they are deployed.
HB 2763 does not require public employers to supplement the pay of military employees; it only gives them the option to do so -- a benefit already provided by many leading private-sector employers.
Passage of the bill is part of a larger effort within the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office to provide comprehensive support for employees serving in the National Guard or Reserves. This support includes the Military Employee Support Program (MESP), launched in July 2014 and detailed in this press release.
Testifying along with Sheriff Roberts today will be Rep. Fagan, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Marc Griffith (who was deployed overseas as a member of the National Guard), Army reservist Dan Hitchcock, and representatives from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Three Rivers Post (#1324) and the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office MESP.
