UPDATE (3/19/2015, 5:40 p.m.)

UPDATE: US Hwy. 26 at Rd. 34 will remain closed for several more hours. The FBI will be taking the lead on investigation. For official news updates and statements, follow the Portland Bureau's Twitter feed.  Also, keep an eye on TripCheck.com for updates on when Hwy. 26 will re-open.

EARLIER (3/19/2015, 11:03 a.m.)

Just before 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2015, dispatch took a report of an explosion in the Rhododendron area, around milepost 48.

Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies responded. Deputies checking the area in Rhododendron near Road 34 located a vehicle just after 7:30 a.m.  -- and found evidence of a possible explosion nearby.

The Metropolitan Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) responded to the scene. The ensuing investigation led authorities to close U.S. Hwy. 26 in both directions at Road 34 in Rhododendron in the interest of public safety while authorities gather evidence.

Authorities remain on-site. More info will be release as the investigation continues.

US Highway 26 remains closed until further notice. Find alternate routes.
