UPDATE — HIKER LOCATED: Search and Rescue deputies
respond to lost hiker on Mt. Hood
UPDATE (May 3rd, 2016 2:49 a.m.):
On May 3, 2016 at about 1:25 a.m., search-and-rescue personnel located and
made contact with Mr. Woldrich. Searchers are currently walking Mr.
Woldrich back to the command post. Mr. Woldrich is reported to be in

On May 2, 2016 at about 4:30 p.m.,
the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office
was contacted about a lost hiker in the Hidden Lakes area on Mt. Hood.
Brian Woldrich, a 49-year-old man from Welches, OR had phoned his
mother to let her know he had become lost and had been trying to find
his way for several hours.
Deputies from the Clackamas County Search and Rescue Unit, along with members of Mountain Wave and Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue responded to the area to assist with locating Mr. Woldrich.
Initial information indicates Mr. Woldrich was out on a day hike in the Hidden Lake area. While hiking, he lost sight of the established trail in a snowfield. Mr. Woldrich attempted to reacquire the trail, but was unable to. He followed a small creek down the mountain to a larger stream of water, but was still unable to find his way back to an established trail.
Searchers were able to locate the general area Mr. Woldrich was in, and
made audible contact with him through the use of signaling whistles at
about 2200 hrs. Mr. Woldrich's location was near a large stream or
river with high banks and surrounding cliffs. Searchers have not been
able to reach Mr. Woldrich because of these environmental hazards, in
the dark of the night, nor has Mr. Woldrich been able to reach the
To ensure the safety of everyone involved, and after talking with Mr. Woldrich, the decision was made to pause operations until daylight. Mr. Woldrich is reported to be in good spirits and uninjured.
Active rescue operations will continue in the morning. Additional updates will be disseminated when available.
