Sheriff's Office responds after boy, 11, drowns in Canby

Just after 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office received several calls about a drowning at the Canby Community Park (1348 S. Berg Pkwy., Canby). Callers reported that an 11-year-old boy had been found underwater and was now unresponsive.

Sheriff's Office deputies and Canby Police officers quickly arrived on-scene and located the boy. All efforts to revive the boy were made, but unfortunately he was declared dead on-scene by medical personnel.

At this writing, it appears that the boy was playing in the water with his family nearby when he disappeared. A few minutes later a family member located the boy submerged in the river. The boy reportedly did not know how to swim, and was not wearing a lifejacket at the time of the incident.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office urges the public to use extreme caution around waterways and to use personal floatation devices while in the water.

The identity of the boy will not be released at this time out of respect to the family.
