Happy Valley PD deputy, suspect hospitalized following shooting at 139th & Sunnyside; tips sought

UPDATE (Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016) -- DEPUTY RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL; INVESTIGATION CONTINUES; TIPS SOUGHT

The deputy involved in yesterday's officer-involved shooting is Robert Cordova. Deputy Cordova is currently contracted to the Happy Valley Police. (Two Clackamas County cities -- Happy Valley and Wilsonville -- contract with the Sheriff's Office to provide municipal police services.) Cordova first became a Sheriff's Office Patrol deputy on July 18, 2015.

Deputy Cordova was released from the hospital yesterday. He is currently recovering at home, and remains on administrative leave while the incident is investigated -- standard procedure in this situation.

Sheriff's Office detectives continue to investigate the incident -- interviewing the involved deputy, witnesses, suspect Steven W. Wilson, and the citizens who came to Deputy Cordova's aid.

EARLIER (Tuesday, Nov. 15, 3:30 p.m.)

• The suspect has been identified as Steven W. Wilson, 40 years old, from Portland. The suspect is currently being treated at OHSU.

• We continue to seek tips from the public. Anyone with information on Steven W. Wilson, the auto-pedestrian incident to which our deputy was responding, or the shooting itself are urged to call 503-723-4949 or use the online email form. Please reference CCSO Case # 16-31438.

• Two citizens -- including the citizen on the ride-along -- assisted our deputy during the incident, which involved a struggle with the suspect.

Clackamas Fire District #1 also responded to the scene.

• Sheriff's Office detectives continue to investigate.


EARLIER (Tuesday, Nov. 15, 1:40 p.m.) -- SUNNYSIDE ROAD RE-OPENED

Sunnyside Road has been re-opened following the investigation of this morning's officer-involved shooting.


EARLIER (Tuesday, Nov. 15, 11:55 a.m.) -- CLARIFICATION ON INVOLVED DEPUTY

The involved deputy is a Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputy contracted to the Happy Valley Police. Two Clackamas County cities -- Happy Valley and Wilsonville -- contract with the Sheriff's Office to provide municipal police services.


EARLIER (Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016 9:19 a.m.)

Shooting scene investigation At approximately 6:21 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, an officer-involved shooting (OIS) occurred in the area of SE 139th and Sunnyside.

The incident occurred during a response to a reported auto-pedestrian crash at SE 139th and Sunnyside. A civilian was travelling with the deputy on a ride-along.

The deputy was shot in the leg.

The Sheriff's Office and other agencies responded to the scene.

The involved deputy was alert and talking to first responders at the scene. AMR transported him to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; he is currently in stable condition.

The suspect was detained and transported to an area hospital with injuries. He is currently in unknown condition.

SE Sunnyside is currently closed at 139th while investigators process the scene. Citizens are advised to find alternate routes.

The media staging area is at Sunnyside Church at SE Sunnyside and 132nd.

The deputy will be placed on administrative while the incident is investigated -- standard procedure in this situation. The deputy's name will not be released at this time.

This release will be updated as more information becomes available.
