In mid-January 2010, Deputy Andrew McVey updated us on his wife's military service: "My wife Suzanne is on her second deployment overseas in three years. It gives me a great sense of pride when I think of our department and how they take care of their own. I'm equally as proud of my wife -- and will continue to support her 100 percent as she tends to the wounded warriors who come her way. Suzanne is a Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserves, and is currently attached to the US Army's hospital located in Landstuhl, Germany. Her tour of duty is just about complete. She should be returning to the states in the next couple of weeks to resume her civilian occupation as a full-time nurse for Multnomah County." |

Retired CCSO Deputy Edward Rhoads just finished serving as a International Police Officer attached to the P.E.U. (Prisoner Escort Unit) High Risk Team in Kosovo. In December 2007, he sent us an e-mail about his last day of service there: "December 24: My last full day in Kosovo. At 57, I acquired the nickname 'That crazy old American.' Team Alpha was mostly made up of Filipinos, Africans, and Turks, with a few Romanians and Austrians thrown in. I was the only American and the oldest team member -- hence the nickname. To quote an old friend, 'I will not tiptoe through life only to arrive safely at death.' Have a great Christmas. I know I will. Signed, The Balkan Deputy." |

Sgt. Anthony Kollias served at home during Operation Noble Eagle -- and overseas during Operation Enduring Freedom. Kollias writes: "My Unit was the 142nd Security Forces Squadron, Oregon Air National Guard. I was a Technical Sergeant (E6) and served from 1992 to 2003. I was activated on 09/11/2001, and served full time until March of 2003. The gun [in the photo at left] is a .50-calibre; I am the one manning it. Most of my service was done at home after 09/11.
