Money Management Program
Program Description
The Money Management Program (MMP) is a protective service for low income seniors and disabled adults who need help managing their finances. The goal of the program is to assist individuals, promote independent living and prevent homelessness and unnecessary institutionalization or guardianship. This service is offered free of charge to eligible individuals.
The MMP trains community volunteers as Representative Payees and Bill Payers to support the financial needs of the clients.
Volunteers work to ensure that the client’s public benefits, such as Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), are used for high priority client needs for shelter, health and food.
Volunteer Recruitment
If you have an interest and passion for working with seniors and disabled adults; experience in personal banking, budgeting, balancing checkbooks, or bill paying; and are able to volunteer two to four hours per month, please call us today!
MMP in Action
Mental Health Case Managers report that the service Money Management Program provides their clients is as important to their well being as their housing and medication.
A slightly confused 81 year old woman was referred to the Money Management Program from Seniors and People with Disabilities Adult Protective Services. When she was admitted to Hospice, workers found that she didn’t have funds to pay for her medications. Her unemployed son had been her caregiver for a long time and in charge of her finances. An investigation showed he had purchased a new car and truck, had mortgaged the house for over $60,000 and accrued thousands of dollars in other debt—all without the client’s knowledge. The Money Management Program became Representative Payee, so her daily needs for care and medication could be taken care of.
