SENIOR HEALTH INSURANCE BENEFITS ASSISTANCE (SHIBA)

Program Description

The SHIBA program coordinator works with trained volunteers to help seniors and younger persons with disabilities understand their health insurance benefits.

Volunteers and staff work one-on-one with those currently enrolled in Medicare and those who will soon be eligible for Medicare to increase beneficiaries’ knowledge about benefits selection, billing issues, appeals, and to provide assistance with the open enrollment process.

The program saves Medicare beneficiaries money by making sure they receive all possible benefits and don’t pay too much out of their own pockets.

SHIBA in Action

In December of 2010, a SHIBA volunteer hosted an enrollment event at his church. Over the course of six hours our volunteers helped to enroll thirty individuals in a Medicare health plan.  Through this enrollment event we were able to create an invaluable relationship with Lake Grove Presbyterian Church and we are currently working on setting up community Medicare classes and counseling at the church.
