Beyond Recycling

No matter how much we focus on recycling our efforts won't significantly help reduce the amount of trash we make unless we also focus on the other two R's: Reducing and Reusing. Here are some ideas for incorporating them into your school and beyond:

  • Worm Composting
It is a fun, wiggly way to explore waste reduction and the process of decomposition. Whether you would like to compost food waste on a small or large scale the Partnership can provide assistance in planning and implementing a successful worm composting system. If you have questions on your bin check out our teacher's guide for suggestions.
  • Waste-LESS Lunch
Encourage students and staff to bring their lunches to school in reusable containers. Shop for food in bulk and avoid single use packaging.
  • Consider using silverware and durable ware in the lunchroom.
  • Buy Recycled
Encourage your school districts or purchasing departments to buy products with recycled content. Recycling markets can only get better as demand for recycled materials increases. Contact the Partnership for information on how to find recycled content products. Help close the loop!
  • Copy on both sides of the paper.
  • Use Email to communicate with staff.
  • Use both sides of the paper in classrooms.
Make a scrap paper bin where students can reuse paper for calculations and other schoolwork.
  • Choose non-toxic cleaning and maintenance products.
  • Use cleaning solutions in concentrated amounts. Saves on packaging.
  • Junk Mail
The Partnership distributes junk mail kits that give tips and provide information on how to reduce unwanted mail and telephone solicitations.
  • ReUSE closet
Designate a "reuse closet" for school supplies (such as crayons, glue, scissors, etc.) that can be reused by others. At the end of the school year set aside a reuse bins, clearly labeled, to collect materials from staff and students that can be reused again during the next school year. In the fall staff and students will be able to go to the reuse closet to obtain the school supplies free of charge.
  • Recycle your shoes for reuse
The Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program recycles old athletic shoes (of any brand) into Nike Grind, used for sport surfaces, such as running tracks, courts and gym floors. Neat, huh? Recycle your old athletic shoes at Far West Fibers, 341 Foothills Rd., Lake Oswego. Other Portland area Far West Fiber locations.
