Clackamas County’s Library Support Services (LSS) seeks a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a part-time, on-call Library Aide. The successful candidate will be crucial in providing daily central sorting and materials handling services for the 13 public libraries we serve. The primary responsibility will be operating Automated Materials Handling (AMH) equipment to efficiently sort approximately 5000 items daily.

Roles & responsibilities

Specific duties include:

  • Operate Automated Materials Handling (AMH) machine under direction and training; during the induction of library materials into the AMH system, will level, manifest, tag, remove, and replace crates.
  • Identify AMH system operational issues and perform basic preventive maintenance, such as vacuuming, wiping down, and visual inspection.
  • Stage crates for unloading into the AMH system and loading onto delivery vehicles.
  • Move library materials in crates into and out of delivery vehicles using ramps or lift gates.
  • May assist with basic mailroom activities, including shipping and receiving, with direction and training.

Training on AMH operation, mailroom activities, and loading/unloading procedures will be provided.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Some knowledge of: English usage, composition, and spelling; basic recordkeeping principles and practices; basic alphabetical and numeric filing systems; basic computer operation; office equipment and machinery and their intended use.

Skill to: Effectively and accurately perform duties that require attention to detail; learn and utilize library classification system, integrated library computer system, or other related software to perform duties; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, the general public, and staff of other libraries; comply with workplace safety rules, laws, regulations, standards and practices; observe on-call policy and demonstrate reliable work schedules.

Working Conditions

Duties require frequent to continuous standing, walking, and sitting; bending, balancing, reaching forward, grasping, and climbing up and down; and the ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, push 75 pounds, and pull 90 pounds. Duties also involve frequent exposure to slippery surfaces.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Any combination of relevant experience and education which would likely provide the required knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods (up to 3 hours).
  • Ability to stoop, bend, reach, and repeatedly lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds, push up to 75 pounds, and pull up to 90 pounds.
  • Ability to follow established procedures accurately and completely.
  • Employment is contingent upon passing a post-offer physical assessment. Accommodation requests will be reviewed on an individual basis in compliance with State and Federal legislation.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history check which may include national or state fingerprint records check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in the Circulation area of a public library.
  • Experience using an Automated Materials Handling (AMH) system.
  • Mail room experience, including preparing/receiving/routing incoming and outgoing parcels and packages.

Hours and Duration

Library Aide shifts are generally 3 hours long, which may be scheduled up to 7 days per week and will generally begin between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM.
