New locations for some boxes; Enhancements include greater accessibility and security

The Clackamas County Clerk’s office has installed new ballot boxes throughout the county during the last several weeks. The new ballot boxes bring improvements in a number of areas.

Specifically, the new boxes have:

  • Enhanced security: The new boxes are specifically designed to secure vote-by-mail ballots. The overall design of the boxes will guard deposited ballots from unauthorized access and potential damage from Pacific Northwest weather.
  • Increased capacity: Many of these new boxes double the capacity of the previous boxes.
  • Improved visibility: Flag holders are attached to each box. This allows each box to be equipped with an American flag while the election period is open. This makes each box easily visible to any voter looking for them, and provides a reminder to residents to vote.
  • Improved accessibility: The new boxes are designed to be ADA compliant and will be available to the public 24/7 during an election. Many boxes are positioned to allow voters to drive up to the ballot box and deposit their ballot without exiting their vehicle.

“Election security is of paramount importance to me,” stated Clackamas County Clerk Sherry Hall, who shepherded the changes. “Residents can rest assured that their ballots are going to be safe and counted.”

All of the old ballot boxes are expected to be replaced with the new ones by Oct. 9.

Along with these new boxes, some locations have changed. Boxes were relocated for one of two reasons.

  1. All ballot boxes are now outdoors. This increases voter accessibility as outside boxes are open 24/7 during an election, whereas those previously located inside public buildings were only accessible during the building’s open hours.
  2. New locations bring improved geographic accessibility. For example, in Lake Oswego, the two boxes were previously located at Lake Oswego City Hall and the Lake Oswego Library, just three blocks from each other. Now, the library box has been replaced with a box in West Lake Oswego (4 miles away), to better serve residents in that general vicinity

“The actions we’ve taken eliminate barriers to voting,” stated Hall. “Our boxes will be visible and accessible to all and, for many of our voters, the box will be a lot closer to them.”
