Clackamas Fire responded yesterday, Wednesday Feb. 6, at 10:30 a.m. to a fire at Hillside Manor, a Housing Authority of Clackamas County-owned property in Milwaukie. The fire was confined to a third-floor unit and there were no reports of injuries to the residents. The resident of the unit was not home when the fire started.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze but 22 units suffered some level of smoke and/or water damage, rendering 17 of them uninhabitable for the near-term.
The Red Cross and Clackamas County Health, Housing and Human Services officials were onsite to assess the needs of impacted residents. Temporary housing accommodations have been made at two hotels for the 29 people who were displaced. The county has also deployed the Behavioral Health Unit and Trauma Intervention Program to provide displaced residents with mental health support, access to food and transportation.
Staff is still assessing the damage. One of the two elevators onsite is currently out of operation due to water damage from sprinklers, but efforts are underway to make timely repairs. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
