9/16 Board of County Commissioners’ statement on Accurate Information

Today, Wednesday, Sept. 16, the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) released the following statement about the importance of accurate information:

Accurate information is absolutely vital for a safe, effective and swift response to the ongoing wildfires threatening Clackamas County.

The Board of County Commissioners relies on county public safety officials to be transparent and accurate with verified public information, rather than any based on rumors or unsubstantiated reports. This is critical for mutual trust between the Board, county staff, and the residents of Clackamas County.

Our collective focus needs to be on keeping people safe, preventing crime, and using the investigatory resources we have to establish facts.  We stand for accurate and complete information, and will insist that any data reported to us is first confirmed.

Last Friday, Sept. 11, the FBI released the following statement on misinformation related to wildfires:

FBI Portland and local law enforcement agencies have been receiving reports that extremists are responsible for setting wildfires in Oregon. With our state and local partners, the FBI has investigated several such reports and found them to be untrue. Conspiracy theories and misinformation take valuable resources away local fire and police agencies working around the clock to bring these fires under control.
