Just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, Clackamas County Jail deputies discovered an unresponsive inmate in his cell.
Upon discovery, corrections deputies and jail medical personnel entered the cell and began CPR. Paramedics from Clackamas County Fire District #1 and American Medical Response also responded to the jail and transported the inmate to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Per standard procedure in the event of a death at the jail, the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team was activated. The Clackamas County Major Crimes Team is a multi-agency team coordinated by the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office, which will oversee the death investigation led by Oregon City Police detectives.
The Clackamas County Deputy Medical Examiner determined the cause of death was suicide.
The deceased inmate has been identified as William Armand Grote, 39, of Klamath Falls. Mr. Grote had been incarcerated in the jail for 15 days on a parole violation. Notifications have been made to Mr. Grote’s family.
