Suspect attempts to elude Happy Valley Police, crashes into house

At about 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2012, Happy Valley Police stopped a white BMW for a traffic violation at SE 172nd Avenue and SE Sunnyside Road.

The driver -- Volodmyr Kokhanevych, age 18, of Troutdale, Oregon -- drove off northbound on SE 172nd Avenue, attempting to elude police.

Moments later, Kokhanevych crashed his car into a house in the 17000 block of SE Hagen Road, and fled on foot. Police were able to determine the identity of the driver and began a K9 search in the area.

No one in the house reported being injured. The house sustained significant damage.

There were two passengers in the vehicle, and they were not injured or arrested.

At about 2:05 a.m. on Friday, April 13, an observant Happy Valley Police sergeant located Kokhanevych at SE 139th Avenue and SE Sunnyside Road and took him into custody.

Kokhanevych refused to reveal the reason he attempted to elude police. He suffered scratches on his face as he fled the crash through blackberry bushes.

Kokhanevych was booked into the Clackamas County Jail on the following charges:

  • Reckless Driving
  • Attempt to Elude Police-Felony
  • Failure to Perform Duties of a Driver -- Misdemeanor
  • Reckless Endangering
  • Criminal Mischief I

His bail is currently $45,000.


Kokhanevych has a recent history of arrests in Portland, Eugene, and Troutdale for Theft I, Criminal Mischief, Burglary I, Criminal Trespass and Disorderly Conduct.

Kokhanevych has a court appearance today (Friday, April 13) at 3 p.m. in Clackamas County Circuit Court.
