Just after 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office was notified of a collision between two personal watercraft on the Willamette River near the Cedaroak Boat Ramp in West Linn.
The collision is currently being investigated by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office detectives and the Medical Examiner's Office.
The three people involved in this incident reportedly knew each other and were enjoying the day on two rented personal watercraft. There were three passengers on the two personal watercraft; two were adults and one was a juvenile. All three were reportedly wearing life jackets.
One adult -- identified as Michael Bailey, 38, of Tigard -- was operating a personal watercraft and struck the other watercraft, which was being operated by the other adult and the juvenile. The collision caused the adult and the juvenile to be knocked off and into the water.
A Good Samaritan at the boat ramp who saw the collision helped pull the injured and unresponsive adult who'd fallen into the water -- identified as Eryk Simmons, 39, from Portland -- to the shore.
Paramedics and emergency personnel from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, American Medical Response and the Clackamas Fire District #1 responded to the scene. Their efforts to revive Eryk Simmons were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The juvenile -- who appeared to have only minor injuries -- was transported to an area hospital as a precaution.
Bailey, who was reportedly responsible for the collision, is cooperating with investigators. The identity of the juvenile involved in the crash is not being released at this time.
Clackamas County Sheriff's Office detectives and Marine Patrol personnel are still investigating this incident and will release further details when available.
