At about 12:43 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, firefighters with Clackamas Fire District #1 responding to a blaze at 16205 SE McKinley requested assistance from Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies.

The first deputies arrived at the fire scene at 12:51 p.m.

Deputies learned that the suspect believed to have set the fire had fled the house, and was reportedly hiding next door at 16215 SE McKinley Avenue.

Deputies responded to the house and found that back door leading into the house had been kicked in.

Evidence led deputies to use a thermal imaging device to search the attic. A heat signature was discovered consistent with a person hiding in the attic.

The suspect was uncooperative.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team responded, and eventually was able to take the suspect -- now identified as Kenneth Mroczek -- into custody at 3:31 p.m. Mr. Mroczek was not cooperative with police.

Mr. Kenneth Wayne Mroczek is the 47-year-old son of the owner of 16205 SE McKinley. The homeowner was out of town at the time of the incident, and Mr. Mroczek was supposed to be over feeding her cat.

The initial investigation -- including physical evidence and statements -- led investigators to believe the fire had been set intentionally.

Mroczek was lodged at the Clackamas County Jail on one count of Burglary in the First Degree and one count of Arson in the First Degree. His bail is set at $300,000. His full booking info is here.

This investigation is now being conducted jointly by the Oregon State Police, Clackamas Fire Marshal, and Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators are interested in speaking with anyone that had contact with Mr. Mroczek in the last 24 hours or other relevant information about this case. Those with information are asked to call the Sheriff's Office Tip Line at (503) 723-4949 or submit tips using the online e-mail form. Please reference CCSO Case # 13-29624.
