Subject rescued at Riverside Park dies at hospital

A male who was pulled from the Clackamas River Monday, June 15, 2015 near Riverside Park has died at the hospital. He has been identified as Xavier Fabian Canales, 37, of Happy Valley.

Medical staff determined that Xavier Canales died of natural causes and did not drown even though the event took place while he was in the river.

At 4:40 p.m. on Monday, June 15, a 911 call came in stating a male was unconscious after being pulled from the Clackamas River. Witnesses told deputies Xavier Canales was swimming with friends when he began to struggle in the water. The friends had trouble pulling Xavier to shore due to the strong current. When they pulled him to shore, several people performed CPR until emergency responders arrived. He was transported by boat to the boat ramp, then by ambulance to an area hospital.
