couple reunited with the stolen footwearA deputy's coffee break resulted in a major break in a porch-theft case from yesterday.

At 7:46 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, a couple called the Sheriff's Office to report a package theft from their front porch on the 2400 block of SE Maple in Milwaukie. The stolen package contained a pair of men's Bostonian dress shoes.

The citizen also emailed porch surveillance video of the theft to the Sheriff's Office -- capturing a clear image of the suspect.

An observant district Sheriff's Office deputy recognized that suspect as David Allen Wilcox, 34, no fixed address.

The next morning (Tuesday, Oct. 27), that same observant deputy was getting coffee at the Oak Grove Starbucks, but was working even while on a break: She saw suspect Wilcox walk by the coffee shop outside.

The deputy confronted suspect Wilcox. Wilcox reportedly admitted to the theft -- and even led deputies to the stolen property, a couple of miles from the original scene of the crime.

The shoes were returned to their rightful owner ("They fit great," we're told), and an investigation into possible related charges is ongoing.

Photos of suspect David Allen Wilcox -- including a surveillance image from the porch crime scene -- as well as photos of the stolen shoes and the couple reunited with the stolen footwear are attached.

The Sheriff's Office urges citizens to have packages delivered to secure locations or in person -- especially during the upcoming holiday season.

The victim couple in this case is available for interviews with local media outlets, as is the observant deputy. Reporters can contact the PIO to arrange
