The victim in yesterday's drowning at High Rocks in Oregon City has been identified as Jeffrey Y. Fleshler, 21, of SW Portland. Mr. Fleshler was pronounced dead at the scene after being removed from the water by dive-rescue personnel.
EARLIER (Sunday, April 3, 2016 9:09 p.m.)
At approximately 4:17 p.m. on Sunday April 3, 2016, deputies with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a male underwater in the area of High Rocks Park in Gladstone, Oregon. Officers with the Gladstone Police Department and the Oregon City Police Department also responded to the scene to assist. First responders arrived on scene approximately two minutes after being dispatched, but were unable to locate the subject. Deputies with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit and Dive Rescue Unit arrived on scene a short time later and performed a comprehensive search for the subject.
At approximately 6 p.m., a diver with the Clackamas County Dive Rescue Unit located the subject near the location he was last seen above water; the subject was deceased at the time he was located.
The subject was recovered and transported to the Meldrum Bar boat ramp, where the Clackamas County Medical Examiner's Office conducted their investigation. The subject has since been positively identified as a 21-year-old male from Portland, Oregon.
The identity of the deceased is not being released until family notifications have been completed. The cause of the drowning is still under investigation.
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office would like to remind people to exercise extreme caution while around public waterways as the weather improves, and that lifejackets save lives.
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office would also like to thank the Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium for their assistance, as well as the Lake Oswego Fire Department, the Gladstone Fire Department, the Clackamas Fire District, American Medical Response, the Oregon City Police Department and the Gladstone Police Department.
