At 10:15 a.m. on Monday, July 25, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a man who had been injured while cutting down a tree in the 19000 block of S. Frank Rd., just outside Colton in rural of Clackamas County.

The Sheriff's Office learned from witnesses that John Ross, 75, had been cutting down a tree -- but as it fell, the upper portion of the tree got hung up in a stand of other trees. Mr. Ross then used his farm tractor to push the tree over. However the upper part of the tree he was pushing on was rotten, and as he pushed with the tractor, the top half of the tree broke off, falling backwards on Mr. Ross.

Mr. Ross was thrown from the tractor and became pinned between the tractor and a tree. He died from his injuries.

Colton Fire and Clackamas Fire District #1 Heavy Rescue arrived on-scene to assist with the investigation.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office would like to remind people to use the proper safety equipment when operating power machinery.
