Clack Fire Rescue Boat CSAR rescue operations

On Friday, July 18, 2025, at around 10:15 p.m., the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a location on the north bank of the Sandy River where a family had reported that they were stranded. The three adults and two children, ages 9 and 13, became stranded after floating on the river near Dodge Park. They had no water, no warm clothing and one of the children needed critical medications.

The Clackamas County Water Rescue Team was launched to help locate the family. A drone from Corbett Fire spotted them shortly after 10:30 p.m. near Camp Namanu. They had a small warming fire going on the shore. At that time, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue coordinators were activated to help rescue the family.

Shortly before 11 p.m. an air unit from the Portland Police Bureau spotted the family and their fire. This assistance helped to guide rescuers to the family’s location.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Clackamas County Search and Rescue volunteers, along with a boat crew from Clackamas Fire, made it to the difficult-to-reach location. They extinguished the fire and helped the five people cross the river where they could hike out. By 5:30 a.m., everyone made it out of the woods safely and were able to go home.

We would like to thank our volunteers from Clackamas County Search and Rescue (CSAR) and our partner agencies at the Portland Police Bureau, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Clackamas Fire, Corbett Fire, and American Medical Response (AMR).
