On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office deputies recovered a white Nissan Sentra which was stolen out of Oregon City on April 1st with Takoda, a family’s service dog, inside. At approximately 11:30 a.m., a sergeant on patrol attempted to stop the vehicle as it was pulling into the Crown Court Apartments on SE 97th Avenue in Clackamas. The driver attempted to flee and collided into two parked vehicles. The male driver and a female passenger ran into an apartment. Takoda was not inside the vehicle.

After several hours and assistance from members of the Clackamas County Interagency Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT), Derek Johnson, 26, and Celeste Bush, 42 of Portland, surrendered and were taken into custody shortly after 4:00 p.m. Nina White, 54, was also arrested for hindering prosecution for attempting to hide Johnson and Bush in her apartment.

Derek Leander Johnson is being held on charges of attempt to elude a police officer, failure to perform duties of a driver, and a warrant from the Oregon Department of Corrections for larceny and identity theft.

Celeste Elizabeth Bush is being held on a parole violation from Multnomah County for identity theft.

Later that evening, Takoda’s owners received a tip that he was seen at an apartment complex on SE Skyshow Place in the City of Happy Valley. Sheriff’s Office deputies, along with deputies assigned to the Happy Valley Police Department, were able to locate Takoda and reunite him with his family.

The case remains under investigation.

Three Clackamas County cities -- Happy Valley, Estacada and Wilsonville -- contract with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office to provide municipal police services.
