FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY ENFORCEMENT OPERATION BEGINS April 9, 2021

As part of ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian safety in Wilsonville, the Wilsonville Police DepartmentClackamas County Sheriff’s Office, and Happy Valley Police Department will be conducting a one-day pedestrian safety enforcement operation that will focus on motorists who fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Wilsonville PD is conducting this public awareness and enforcement program to educate and encourage members of the community to develop and maintain safe practices while driving, walking, and cycling in Wilsonville.

Crosswalk enforcement actions are an effective way to communicate pedestrian right-of-way laws to both drivers and pedestrians. The Oregon Department of Transportation and Wilsonville Police Department take enforcement actions in response to community concerns and to educate the general public on the rules at marked and unmarked crossings.

When approaching a crosswalk where pedestrians are present, drivers must yield the right-of-way. This operation will serve as a reminder of this responsibility and we expect that voluntary compliance will be improved as a result.

Three Clackamas County cities -- Happy ValleyEstacada and Wilsonville -- contract with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office to provide municipal police services.
