A man is in custody following an altercation and SWAT standoff near Milwaukie.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to multiple reports of a violent altercation with gunfire in the area of SE 79th Avenue & SE Otty Street near Milwaukie. One man -- Shannon Justin Pompella, 50, of Milwaukie -- had exited a Ford F150 and physically assaulted a second man known to him, then returned to the pickup. Following an additional verbal exchange, the second man then threw a rock at Pompella's pickup. Pompella then exited the vehicle and fired a handgun in the direction of the second man, who was uninjured. Pompella then left the scene in the pickup, returning to his residence.

Pompella and the second man had reportedly had a disagreement earlier that day.

Deputies interviewed the second man, then responded to Pompella's nearby residence. Pompella refused to exit his house, and additional resources including SWAT and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) responded to the scene.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., following several hours of CNT negotiations, Pompella exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.

Shannon Pompella was transported to Clackamas County Jail, where he is currently held without bail on charges including Attempted Assault II and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Complete booking info is here: https://web3.clackamas.us/roster/#inmates
