OREGON CITY, Or. -- A New York man who traveled to Sandy to engage in sex with an underage teenage girl was sentenced to 25 months in prison on Thursday, Aug. 6.
Erik Thammango Lopez, 27, of Rochester, New York pled guilty in Clackamas County Circuit Court to three counts of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree.
The Sandy Police Department, working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies, learned that Lopez would be visiting Oregon in December 2025 to meet the girl, then 17, for sex.
Upon his arrival, Lopez was arrested at the Portland International Airport by the Sandy Police Department and other authorities. He had in his possession a photo of the girl, chocolates, and stuffed animals.
An investigation by Sandy Det. Michael Boyes found that Lopez made a similar trip in October 2025 and stayed three days at a Sandy-area hotel where he met with the girl. They also exchanged sexually explicit photos.
Lopez knew the girl had mental health issues which made her an especially vulnerable victim.
Lopez “was aware of these issues. I saw messages between them where he acknowledged them. Not only did he understand these disabilities … but he actively worked to exploit them,” the girl’s father told the court at the sentencing.
“Detective Boyes and our federal partners conducted an extensive investigation that revealed a disturbing case of child sexual abuse. This defendant took advantage of a vulnerable 17-year-old girl he knew struggled with mental health issues and manipulated her to engage in sexual activity on multiple occasions,” said Deputy District Attorney Josh Cutino, who prosecuted the case.
The District Attorney’s Office recommended Lopaz serve 66 months in prison. Circuit Judge Todd Van Rysselberghe imposed a 25-month sentence.
