OREGON CITY, Or. -- A 27-year-old man who ran a red light and caused a fatal car crash last year was sentenced to 100 months in prison Monday.
Austin Richard Jones pled guilty last month to Criminally Negligent Homicide, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Reckless Driving and two counts of Assault in the Third Degree and Driving under the Influence of Intoxicants.
Jones was arrested after he sped through a red light at an estimated 50 miles per hour on Southeast Milport Road on Aug. 31, 2025. Jones’ 2013 Chrysler 200 LX collided with a 2011 Infiniti EX3 southbound on Southeast McLoughlin Boulevard.
The driver of the Infiniti, Donald Wesley Brown, 91, of Oak Grove and his wife, Margaret “Margi” Brown, 82, were injured as were Jones and his passenger, Makayla Jean Keegan, 29, of Molalla. All four individuals were transported to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital where Margaret Brown died.
Margaret Brown’s family and members of her church recalled her devotion to her family, faith, and community. They remembered her as a woman in her 80s still actively engaged in life and in service to others.
Her daughter, son-in-law and husband told Circuit Judge Cody Weston about the deep pain of their loss, how her death devastated their family and the emotional and physical toll it has taken on them.
“She was the sunshine of my life. For over 60 years of marriage, she was the ultimate demonstration of God’s blessing to me,” Donald Brown said.
“When finally discharged from the hospital, I didn’t want to return to the home Margi and I shared. I couldn’t imagine living there without her,” Brown said.
“While the physical pain from my injuries has waned, I continue to struggle with the emotional pain of losing my wife. My sorrow for her loss is beyond human understanding or explanation,” he said.
Jones was charged in May 2025 in Multnomah County Circuit Court with Unlawful Use of a Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Possession of Methamphetamine. The case is pending.
Jones was convicted in Washington County of Unlawful Use of a Vehicle in August 2023 and sentenced to 13 months in prison and one year of post-prison supervision.
