OREGON CITY, Or. -- Vince Edgar Chavez was arraigned Thursday on charges that he assaulted and kidnapped a 10-year-old girl from her Canby home on Oct. 28 and later sexually assaulted the girl. Chavez is also charged with physically assaulting the girl’s 12-year-old sister during the alleged abduction.

Chavez, 35, was arraigned in Clackamas County Circuit Court on the following charges: Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Kidnapping in the First Degree, Sexual Abuse in the First Degree, two counts of Sodomy in the First Degree, Burglary in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree and two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

Circuit Judge Jeffrey S. Jones granted the District Attorney’s Office’s request that Chavez be held without bail at the Clackamas County Jail. Chavez will be arraigned on an indictment on Nov. 5.

The older girl was hit in the head numerous times with a hammer and police found the younger girl at another location, restrained by duct tape and stuffed in a duffle bag, Chief Deputy District Attorney Chris Owen said at the arraignment.

“Due to the numerous violent felonies alleged in this case and the vulnerability of the victims, we are asking the court to hold the defendant without bail,” Owen said.

“The District Attorney’s Office is grateful for the swift action by our law enforcement partners in locating and arresting the defendant before he could inflict further harm,” Owen said.

“We thank the Canby Police Department, the member agencies of the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team, the FBI and the U.S. Marshal’s Service for their diligent work in rescuing this child,” Owen said.
