If you are age 65 and older or have a disability, the Ride Together and Vets Driving Vets programs can help you get to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other essential services—on your schedule.
These volunteer-based programs allow you to:
- Ask a family member (who lives in a separate home), friend, or neighbor to be your driver, or
- Veterans may be matched with fellow veteran volunteer drivers
Ride Together (RT) - Turn Everyday Trips into Meaningful Moments.
Already driving a family member (who lives in a separate household), friend, or neighbor to appointments or errands? Through Ride Together (RT), you can receive mileage reimbursement for the trips you're already making while providing more than just transportation, you'll offer companionship, conversation, and peace of mind along the way.
Simply submit your eligible trips through our dispatch system to receive reimbursement. It's a flexible way to support someone you care about while making every mile count.
Vets Driving Vets (VDV) - Veterans Helping Veterans—One Ride at a Time.
Join fellow veterans in making a real difference. Vets Driving Vets (VDV) connects volunteer veteran drivers with other veterans who need transportation to medical appointments and essential services. Along the way, you'll provide something just as valuable as the ride itself, camaraderie, understanding, and companionship from someone who shares a similar experience.
Volunteer when it works for your schedule. Whether you have a few hours a month or more time to give, your support helps fellow veterans stay independent, connected, and cared for.
Eligibility and Requirements: (ADD)
- Pass County background and drivers history check.
- Must have a clean driving record of 7 years or more.
- Complete county provided drivers education upon onboarding. This training requires the use of a computer or tablet. Training courses may offer discounts on auto insurance.
- Attend volunteer meetings and/or training throughout the year. This may include in-person and/or online courses.
- Pass a Road Test Evaluation upon onboarding and every 2 years after.
- Drive their own vehicle. Keeping it clean and in working order.
- Maintain current personal auto insurance is the primary coverage, and the County is the secondary coverage.
- Track rides and mileage to receive mileage reimbursement through an online management platform. Paper tracking sheets are available for those that do not have access to technology.
- Communicate through email and phone.
- Provide weekly availability to dispatch, for TRP and VDV only; RT plan their own rides.
Whether you recruit someone you trust to become a volunteer or are matched with a fellow veteran, these programs are designed to keep you moving safely and independently.
