Suspect in Attempted Murder of Clackamas County Deputies Charged

Deputies Released from Hospital and Recovering

DA sealOn July 3rd, 2023, the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office filed formal charges against two defendants following the events of June 30th, 2023. The defendants were arraigned this afternoon at 2pm via video at the Clackamas County Courthouse.

Tyler James Scott, a 32-year-old, white male, from Portland has been charged with:

  • Two counts of Attempted Aggravated Murder of a Police Officer
  • Two counts of Attempted Murder in the 1st Degree
  • Felon in Possession of a Firearm
  • Burglary in the 2nd Degree
  • Theft in the 1st Degree

Scott’s bail is currently set at $1,000,000.

Joseph Ray Shaffer, a 46-year-old, white male, from Portland has been charged with:

Burglary in the 2nd Degree

Theft in the 1st Degree

Shaffer’s bail is currently set at $40,000.

The deputies who were shot investigating the original burglary call have been discharged from a local hospital and are both recovering from their injuries.

They are:

  • Deputy Dan Blair, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, employed since 2015.
  • Deputy Jeremy McKenna, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, employed since 2022.

A grand jury will hear evidence in this case as well as the use of force by deputies next week.

This marks the 4th incident this year where deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office have been fired on by suspects.
