OREGON CITY, Or. -- One of two men accused of shooting a teenager at Clackamas Town Center in December pleaded guilty Wednesday in Clackamas County Circuit Court to attempted murder and was sentenced to 90 months in prison.
Pedro Anthony Cornejo-Morales, 19, pleaded guilty to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon as part of a plea agreement. Under Oregon law, 90 months is the presumptive sentence for Attempted Murder in the Second Degree.
On Dec. 20, 2024, Cornejo-Morales walked up to a car in the mall parking lot and fired five shots at a passenger, 15-year-old Zenon Elias Mendez. Mendez suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand and was treated at a nearby hospital.
A second man, Carlos Raul Hererra-Medrano, 20, also was charged with attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon. His trial is scheduled for Aug. 12.
Cornejo-Morales and Hererra-Medrano followed Mendez around the mall prior to the shooting, according to Clackamas County Deputy District Attorney Josh Cutino. Mendez and a female accompanying him realized they were being followed and recognized the two men. They left the mall and when they attempted to drive away, Cornejo-Morales and Hererra-Medrano approached their vehicle and Cornejo-Morales began shooting.
Cornejo-Morales was apprehended near the mall a short time later. Hererra-Medrano was arrested on Dec. 31. Both men are Gresham residents.
Cutino and Clackamas County Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Morrow are the prosecutors on both cases.
