DA sealOREGON CITY, Or. -- The second of two men accused of shooting a teenager at Clackamas Town Center in December pleaded guilty Friday in Clackamas County Circuit Court to assault and a weapons charge.

Carlos Raul Hererra-Medrano, 20, pleaded guilty to Assault in the Second Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. He was sentenced to 70 months in prison on the assault charge and 60 months on the weapons charge, which runs concurrently.

Co-defendant Pedro Anthony Cornejo-Morales, 19, pleaded guilty on June 4 to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon and was sentenced to 90 months in prison.

On Dec. 20, 2024, Cornejo-Morales walked up to a car in the mall parking lot and fired five shots at a passenger, 15-year-old Zenon Elias Mendez. Mendez suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand and was treated at a nearby hospital.

Hererra-Medrano, Cornejo-Morales and Mendez knew one another and the shooting arose from a dispute between them, said Clackamas County Deputy District Attorney Josh Cutino.

Cornejo-Morales and Hererra-Medrano followed Mendez around the mall prior to the shooting.

Mendez and a female accompanying him realized they were being followed and recognized the two men. They left the mall and as they attempted to drive away, Cornejo-Morales and Hererra-Medrano approached their vehicle.

Hererra-Medrano brandished a gun and intimidated the driver, preventing her from leaving as Cornejo-Morales began shooting.

Cornejo-Morales was apprehended near the mall a short time later. Hererra-Medrano was arrested on Dec. 31. Both men are Gresham residents.

Cutino and Clackamas County Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Morrow prosecuted both cases.
