At 98 years old, with a desire to live to 107, Marge Lockhart reflects on her 17 years of service with Clackamas County’s Senior Companion Program (SCP), though some details of the past have slipped her mind. When asked how she first started volunteering, she admits, "I can't remember." But it doesn't take long to understand the roots of her dedication. She shares that what drew her to the role was simple—curiosity and a love for people.

Volunteering with SCP has brought her joy. Lockhart reveals, "I've always enjoyed the clients. It feels special to do something for others." The smiles, the anticipation of her visits, and the sense of importance she brings to those she helps is something she deeply appreciates. Though her clients often have families, many don't communicate regularly with them, so her presence is a lifeline, especially for those who are lonely. "I talk to them every day. I know I'm making life easier for them," she says warmly.

Lockhart knows that the most rewarding part of volunteering is feeling valued. "I know my time is spent with people who appreciate it and find it important," she reflects. It's not about recognition for her, it's about knowing she's made a difference. When asked what motivates her to keep volunteering, "I'm a busy bee!" she says with a laugh, "You get satisfaction seeing the impact on your clients' lives. It's worth the investment of time." Volunteering has been more than just a role—it has shaped her understanding of compassion. "I've learned to be compassionate for those in need," she says seriously. "I don't consider it a job. I never have." SCP is a program that has enriched her life and the lives of the people she helps.

The Senior Companion Program (SCP) offers support to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities in Clackamas County. Our program helps individuals live independently and safely for as long as possible, feel connected, and avoid having to move from what is familiar to them.
