On October 1, local leaders and community members representing the Sunrise Corridor Community Visioning project presented to the Joint Committee on Transportation during Legislative Days at the Oregon State Capitol.
Legislative Days provides a crucial opportunity outside of the regular session for committees to receive updates on key issues and prepare for upcoming work. For the Sunrise Corridor team, it was a chance to thank lawmakers for their $4 million investment through HB 5006 in 2021, funding that has helped lay the groundwork for this community-led effort to shape the future of one of Clackamas County’s most important transportation corridors.
“This investment made it possible for us to bring the community together in a meaningful way,” said Jamie Stasny, Clackamas County’s Transportation and Land Use Policy Manager. “We’ve spent the last few years listening, learning, and planning alongside residents, local governments, and regional partners. The vision that’s emerging is one that balances transportation needs with livability and economic growth.”
The panel included Clackamas County Commissioner Paul Savas, Happy Valley Mayor Tom Ellis, Metro Councilor Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Stasny, and Sunrise Corridor Leadership Group members Marchelle Paholsky and Mark Aasland—each representing a unique perspective on how this collaborative effort will shape the region’s future.
“As a community member, being part of this process has been inspiring,” said Marchelle Paholsky, a member of the Sunrise Corridor Coalition Leadership Group. “People from across our communities are coming together to share ideas and create solutions that reflect our shared values. It’s about making sure the Sunrise Corridor works for everyone—now and for generations to come.”
With the visioning phase complete, the project is now entering its coalition phase, where community members, leaders, and partners will work side by side to carry the vision forward.
