OREGON CITY, Or. -- The Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office has issued an update on an officer-involved shooting last week.
On Dec. 5, 2025, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies contracted to the Wilsonville Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance involving a moving vehicle.
Deputies located the vehicle near Southwest Stafford Road and Southwest 65th Avenue in unincorporated Clackamas County.
The driver of the vehicle, Matthew Evan Cabril,19, (white male) of Wilsonville unexpectedly exited the vehicle wielding an axe overhead and ran towards the deputies. The incident was captured on body worn and in dash cameras.
Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies Dep. Madison Stefanovich and Dep. Nathan Banfi then shot at Cabril, striking him three times.
Deputies immediately began lifesaving measures and rendered aid until paramedics with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue arrived. Cabril was transported to Oregon Health and Science University Hospital where he is in critical condition.
Dep. Stefanovich has been a deputy with Clackamas County since 2022. Dep. Banfi has been a certified police officer since 2018 and a deputy with Clackamas County since 2022.
According to policy, both deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave.
Pursuant to Clackamas County Critical Incident protocol, this matter will be submitted to a Clackamas County grand Jury for an evaluation of the use of deadly physical force. The investigation is being led by the Lake Oswego and West Linn Police Departments in coordination with the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team. There will be no further comment or release of information until after grand jury is complete.
