The current winter storms have brought heavy rains to the area, and Clackamas County is urging residents to prepare for potential flooding, particularly in the county’s low-lying areas.
The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for several areas, including Johnson Creek near Sycamore. Officials predict Johnson Creek to reach minor flood stage between 4-10 a.m. Tuesday. Flood-prone areas or areas that commonly flood could also see increased water levels. Residents are encouraged to exercise caution when traveling, as heavy rains and flooding reduce visibility. Clackamas County also sent an alert to residents in the Johnson Creek area with information about flooding.
“During this time of year and in these conditions, even a few inches of rain can cause a flood,” said Clackamas County Disaster Management Director Daniel Nibouar. “It’s important to take as many precautions as you can now and stay alert to the weather forecast.”
Sandbags, safety information and driving tips have been made available at flooding preparedness.
Clackamas County wants to remind everyone of the following safety tips for floods:
- Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Water can be deeper than it appears and only 12 inches of moving water can carry away a small vehicle.
- Before driving use, use TripCheck for the latest updates on road conditions and closures.
- Avoid walking through flooded areas as floodwaters may be contaminated with oil, gas, or raw sewage. Water may also be hiding hazards and debris.
