WES responds to sewage overflow into the Willamette River

Date

Update: the overflow stopped at approximately 3:45 p.m., Tuesday afternoon

Due to the heavy rain event, Clackamas Water Environment Services (WES) personnel responded to an overflow of wastewater into the Willamette River early Tuesday morning.

The overflow occurred from a manhole near 610 McLoughlin Blvd. in Oregon City, just upstream from the Arch Bridge. WES personnel placed signs informing area residents about the spill in the vicinity of the incident. This site is not accessible to the public. As a precaution, the public is advised to avoid contact with the Willamette River between the Oregon City Arch Bridge and the Abernathy Bridge for 24 hours due to the possibility of bacterial contamination. We are closely monitoring the situation.

The Oregon Emergency Response System was notified.

There are no other reports of overflows at this time. Operations crews worked through the night and expect to do the same again tonight.
